| Resumo: | The main scope of this paper is to analyse the role of human capital and its dimensions – education and health - as an essential factor of labour productivity and, consequently, of economic growth. Using a panel data model exclusively for developed countries for the 1980–2005 period and fixed effects methods, we conclude that the inclusion of health variables adds explanation power to the growth model. This empirical evidence corroborates the idea that health improvements have significant benefits on economic growth and therefore it should be considered as an important component of human capital along with education. Investing in individuals’ education and health is important not only for an increasing wellbeing but also for a sustainable economic growth. |
